In December of 1999, Doug Vatter and John Jerger met and recognized that they shared a common interest and goal - to provide superior back office insurance services to companies writing mobile home policies in Florida. They saw a need within the industry and knew that through their experience and expertise, they could do something about it. This led to the formation of West Point Underwriters in March, 2000.
After the formation of West Point Underwriters, they immediately identified a gap in the systems available for MGAs. They developed a solution that would not only support the specific needs of MGAs, but allowed their customers to rate, bind and invoice a declaration page on-demand.
In September 2000, utilizing the front offices of a warehouse near St. Petersburg/Clearwater airport and their new software capability, the 5-person staff wrote their first mobile home policy as an MGA. Within the next year, the book of business grew to 12,000 policies and $6 million in premium.
As the company continued to grow in the Property & Casualty business, the storms of 2004 and 2005 strained the capabilities of insurance companies across Florida. Many new and existing insurers turned to West Point to support them and enable them to better service their customers. By the end of 2005, West Point had $60 million in premium and over 70,000 policies.
Over the next decade, West Point built upon its solid reputation and strengths to reach into other states and lines of business further expanding their market share. The company continues to strive for more innovation, transparency, and best practices while ultimately giving the client more control.
In early 2016, West Point Underwriters re-branded to become West Point Insurance Services. This new name represent West Point’s commitment to providing both technical and business services to carriers in the insurance industry. West Point Insurance Services employs a team of more than 120 and manages over 600,000 policies.
